South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung has just announced a new milestone that its Galaxy S II smartphone has managed to achieve.

The company’s flagship device was sold in more than 20 million units to date, which is a remarkable record for a single mobile phone.

Galaxy S II was unveiled to the world in February last year, but arrived on shelves only in April 2011.

In the ten months that have passed since, the device proved to be one of the best and fastest selling mobile phones in Samsung’s lineup.

This milestone also makes Galaxy S II faster selling than its predecessor, the Galaxy S, which was sold in over 22 million units to date, Samsung announced.

The handset vendor also announced that Galaxy S II managed to sell over one million units in only 24 days after being launched, and that it reached the five million mark in three months.

The first ten million Galaxy S II units were sold in five months after the initial release, the mobile phone maker notes.

Galaxy S II was made available for purchase last year with a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display and with a dual-core application processor inside. It was one of the slimmest devices launched last year, measuring only 8mm at its thinner point.

This year, Samsung is expected to bring to shelves the successor of Galaxy S II. In fact, the company has already confirmed plans to make this unveiling. It runs Android 2.3 and should get a taste of Android 4.0 soon.

Rumor has it that this phone would be called Galaxy S III, and that it might be announced to the world in less than a month, on March 15th.

Samsung has not confirmed that until now, but it did say that the mobile phone would be launched in the first half of the current year. However, it will not make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.

Nokia Carla (ex-Symbian) Update Coming to Belle Smartphones in Q4 2012

Nokia has just released the Belle update for most of its Symbian Anna smartphones and the company is readying for a new challenge, Nokia Carla for all compatible devices.

The folks at NokiaPoweruser have been tipped by a source close to the matter on Nokia’s update roadmap for 2012. It looks like the Finnish company will start shipping the first Nokia Carla smartphones in Q3 2012.

For the time being, the following models have been confirmed to ship with Nokia Carla, beginning Q3 2012: Nokia 603, Nokia 700 and Nokia 701.

The rest of Nokia smartphones that have just received the Belle update will be upgraded in Q4 2012. The following first-generation Belle smartphones will get the update in the fourth quarter of the year: Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia E7, Nokia X7, Nokia E6 and Nokia C6-01.

Second-generation Belle smartphones that were not shipped with Nokia Carla on board will receive the update in early Q4 2012. Rumor has it that Nokia plans a global roll-out for Carla, so all users could receive the update at the same time.

However, there’s a slight, but important, difference between the first-gen and second-gen Belle smartphones. The former category lacks NFC support (except Nokia C7) and comes with less than 1 GHz CPUs.

This is why Nokia decided to push a “lighter version of Carla” to all these first-gen Belle smartphones. Browser and resizable widgets, however, have been confirmed to be included in this lighter version of Carla, along with “enhanced smoothness and bug fixes.”

Furthermore, Nokia N8’s successor (Nokia Pure View) won’t be the last smartphone to be launched with Carla on board, the folks at NokiaPoweruser claim. According to them, Nokia plans to launch at least two more models in 2012.

Rumor has it that the Finnish handset maker also plans to launch several smartphone with Nokia Donna OS next year.

LG Optimus 3D Cube Now Official

South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics appears set to assault the smartphone market this year, and has launched a new device for that.

During the past week, the company unveiled no less than six new smartphones, the new LG Optimus 3D Cube included.

The new mobile phone comes to the market as the successor of last year’s LG Optimus 3D, and comes with a series of enhancements into the mix.

For example, while being capable of recording videos in 3D, the new device will also offer editing capabilities for these clips. Not to mention that LG packed it with a 3D mapping application right from the start.

LG has made the new smartphone official for the Korean market, but it might announce expanded availability for it as soon as next week, during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Before that, however, the handset vendor did offer info on the phone’s hardware specifications, unveiling the fact that it will hit shelves with a large 4.3-inch IPS display on the front, capable of offering increased brightness and sharpness.

The new LG Optimus 3D Cube is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz application processor (said to be a Texas Instruments), and features an outer design similar to the one Optimus 3D boasts.

Running under Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system (it might get a taste of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform in the near future), the handset also sports a custom user interface, the same as the original device did.

The new mobile phone also measures 126.8 x 67.4 x 9.6 mm and packs NFC capabilities inside, the same as the latest flavor of Optimus LTE, dubbed Tag, does.

Additionally, the handset vendor announced that the new device would arrive with support for the LG Tag system, through which users will be able to group specific settings and attach them to an NFC-activated label. To change the way the phone looks and feels, users will simply have to place the device near the said card.
