The LTE-enabled Galaxy S II has just received the long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. However, only Galaxy S II LTE owners living in South Korea will be able to upgrade to the latest version of Android.

Although the smartphone is now available in other regions as well, Samsung decided to start the rollout of the upgrade in South Korea.

According to the handset maker, Android 4.0 ICS for Galaxy S II LTE is now available for download via Samsung Kies desktop software.

Obviously, users will have to download the latest version of the application in order to be able to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Aside from bringing the phone’s software to version Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the update also adds Face Recognition (Face Unlock) new feature, as well as Android Beam.

It will also introduce Mobile Data Management application and some usability and application improvements. Moreover, some bugs have been fixed as well. Several user interface elements and settings will be changed too.

Even though Samsung claims the phone book, messages, photos and other user content is usually saved on the phone, it is recommended to back up all sensitive data stored on the Galaxy S II LTE via Kies.

In addition, 60MB of free space is required for the upgrade, so users should make sure they have enough storage space before attempting to install the update.

Keep in mind that after the upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, some applications previously installed on the smartphone may not work anymore due to incompatibility.

However, there’s a chance that some of these applications, specifically optimized for Android 4.0 ICS, may be available for download via Samsung Apps.

The Galaxy S II LTE is also available in Canada via Rogers, so we expect Samsung to push the update to this model in the following weeks as well.

Tizen OS Runs Android Apps, Gets Loaded on Galaxy S II HD LTE

Posted in News on 15th May 2012

Tizen OS

Samsung is working on the development of a new mobile operating system, Tizen, which is slowly shaping up as a real-world platform, although many have had a hard time trusting that.

To ensure that the OS will benefit from a good start, Samsung made sure to include it with support for applications developed for other mobile platforms out there as well, including its own bada OS, or Google’s Android operating system.

The idea behind this is very simple. Tizen arrives with support for a program called Application Compatibility Layer (ACL), which enables it to run software developed using the bada SDK, as well as Android applications, as can be seen in the first video below (via TheHandheldBlog).

According to Open Mobile, the entity promoting ACL, devices powered by the new Tizen OS will benefit from full compatibility with Android apps and will deliver the same level of responsiveness as native devices would.

The idea is not new, that’s for sure, since Research In Motion made a similar move with offering support for Android apps on its PlayBook tablet PC, but it appears to have been refined and made much easier to use.

Recently, we had the chance to have a look at what was said to be the first Samsung device to run under the new Tizen OS, and now we can get a taste of the company’s Galaxy S II HD LTE powered by the new platform.

The new HTML5-based mobile platform seems highly appealing, already packing great animation effects, considering the fact that it is still work in progress.

For example, the image gallery enables users to scroll through images either in a spiral or in a list view, while enjoying smooth animations. Have a look at the second video below (coming from TizenExperts) to learn more on the matter.

One other thing that this clip shows is that more than one Samsung device is supported in the new platform, suggesting that expanded compatibility might be planned for the not too distant future.

Canadian mobile phone carrier TELUS is reportedly gearing up for the release of new HTC smartphones on its airwaves, and the HTC One S should be one of them.

The wireless operator might put the new mobile phone up for order as soon as May 17th, with the most appealing price tags attached to it.

According to leaked documents that emerged over at MobileSyrup, the Android smartphone will run for only $ 569.99 (445 Euros) contract-free at TELUS, which is $ 30 less than what other carriers ask for it in the same conditions.

For those who would rather go for a monthly contract instead of purchasing only the device, TELUS has some other offerings in store.

Thus, users can choose a 3-year contract agreement on a minimum monthly spend of $ 50, so that they would pay only $ 99.99 for the new HTC smartphone.

If purchased with a 2-year contract, the HTC One S would go for $ 469.99 (367 Euros), while being priced at $ 519.99 (405 Euros) on 1-year contracts.

The HTC One S arrives on shelves with a 1.5 GHz dual-core application processor packed inside, complemented by 1GB of RAM.

It sports a 4.3-inch AMOLED Colour LCD touchscreen display that can deliver a qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels) and features an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with HD video recording capabilities, complemented by a 1.3MP front-facing camera for making video calls.

HTC also packed the new handset with 16GB of internal storage, as well as with access to 25GB of free space on Dropbox. HTC One S also arrives on shelves with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, as well as with support for 3G networks.

Running under Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system with the Sense 4.0 UI on top of it, the new device also features Beats Audio technology inside.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for T-Mobile USA’s HTC Sensation 4G has finally received a release date. According to the carrier, beginning May 16 the optional update will be available for download free of charge.

T-Mobile USA also notes that Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich will be pushed OTA (over the air), in stages, so it might reach all HTC Sensation 4G units at once.

Aside from bringing the phone’s software to version Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, the upcoming update also adds Wi-Fi mobile hotspot capability, which will require users to sign up for the feature online or by calling customer care in order to be able to use the service.

In addition, the update will upgrade HTC Sense user interface to version 3.6, not 4.0. It is also worth mentioning the system bar has been enhanced to easily view recent applications.

With Android 4.0.3 ICS the widgets can be re-sized, and some lock screen actions will be available for use, such as pull down notifications and adjust volume while device is locked.

The well-known Face Unlock features will be added as well, along with data usage controls and home screen folders.

The following improvements have been included with the latest Android 4.0.3 ICS for HTC Sensation 4G:

- Improved battery life;
- Improved text input and spell checking;
- Improved menu structure
.

It is recommended to manually search for the update by going to Settings / About phone / HTC software updates / Check. If the update is available, simply follow the on-screen prompts.

Keep in mind that the Android 4.0.3 ICS update will only be available for HTC Sensation units that are running Android version 2.3.3 / Software version 1.50.531.1, 1.29.531.2, or 1.45.531.1.

Unfortunately, those who already rooted their Sensation 4G smartphones won’t be able to flash the Ice Cream Sandwich update. We recommend users to charge the phone’s battery for at least 50%.

Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has just cut the price tag of its Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX smartphone by $ 100.

The carrier has been rumored recently to plan reducing the cost for this device, and it appears that it has done so today.

A banner on the main Verizon Wireless website shows the new offer, and clicking on it will get you to the phone’s webpage, which displays the same contract cost.

Also included in the deal is a Color app to enable DROID RAZR MAXX users to stay close to their friends and family at all times.

Apparently, Verizon is teaming up with Motorola, Color for Facebook and Saturday Night Live for delivering live backstage footage during the May 19th show. Those who would like to receive the footage would have to install the app on their phones and “like” Verizon or SNL on Facebook.

Launched on Big Red’s network this year, the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX features a 4.3” Super AMOLED Advanced touchscreen display capable of delivering a qHD resolution (960 x 540).

The handset packs a dual-core 1.2 GHz application processor complemented by 1 GB of LP DDR2 RAM and sports 16GB of internal memory, and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of external storage space (a 16GB card pre-installed).

On the back, the mobile phone features an 8-megapixel photo snapper with support for HD video recording, complemented by a 1.3MP front camera for video calling.

The smartphone is powered by a 3300 mAH Li–Ion battery and features support for Verizon’s CDMA and LTE networks, as well as for WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity.

At the moment, the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX runs under Google’s Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) platform, but Verizon promised an update to the newer Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform for the near future.

Those who would like to purchase the smartphone at the reduced $ 199 price (with a two-year contract agreement) should head over to this page on Verizon’s website.
